Kate Johnson, trumpet teacher
I am a classically trained trumpet player with over 30 years of experience. Currently, I am working on my Masters of Music degree at the Conservatory of Music at UMKC. My emphasis area of study is in music pedagogy which allows me to use research and instructional techniques that have been proven to be effective. In 2004, I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from UMKC. While an undergraduate student at the Conservatory, I was principal trumpet with the Conservatory Orchestra and the Conservatory Wind Symphony. Over the years, I have studied trumpet with Dr. Keith Benjamin (UMKC Conservatory), Dr. Lisa Blackmore (UMSL), Mr. David Sanderson (MM Yale), and Mr. Bob Hansen (Missouri Band Masters Hall of Fame), and currently study with Dr. Matthew Vangjel. I have played professionally in both Springfield, MO and the Lake of the Ozarks areas, including playing principal trumpet with the Springfield-Drury Civic Orchestra.
While I enjoy playing trumpet, my passion is in teaching. I have over 20 years of experience as a private trumpet teacher and have worked with students of all ages and abilities. As a trumpet instructor with classical training, I specialize in tone quality, fundamentals, practice techniques, audition prep, and performance anxiety. My students have achieved success at the district and state levels in both Missouri and Kansas, regularly win college scholarships, as well as positions in the Kansas City Youth Symphony, the Fountain City Brass Academy Bands, and the UMKC Midwest Honor Band.
